Disease Management Successes Through Onsite Care
Helps Florida Employers Lower Healthcare Costs

Crowne Consulting Group and CareHere help employers reduce healthcare costs
through onsite health and wellness centers for employees.

Nov. 6, 2014 (Ocoee, Fla.) – Employers are faced with escalating healthcare costs, including the rising rates of costly chronic diseases affecting their workforce.  The American Diabetes Association, which is now honoring Diabetes Awareness Month, estimates the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.

“Rising costs ring the alarm for bringing worksite care to employees; it’s crucial to make visiting the doctor more convenient for employees,” said Ray Tomlinson, president of Crowne Consulting Group, an employee benefits consulting firm.  “Our client’s employees say that easier access and personalized attention has helped them gain control over diabetes and other conditions.”

Crowne Consulting Group, Inc. (owd.dev/PCHP/CrowneGroup/wp) operates over 30 Florida-based employee health centers in collaboration with Tennessee-based CareHere, LLC, which operates over 100 nationwide.  At no cost to the employee, onsite health centers provide an array of medical clinic services including primary care, screenings, lab work, x-rays, occupational health, wellness programs, disease management, and free generic prescriptions.

According to a 2014 study by the RAND Corporation, a disease management component reduced healthcare costs by an estimated $136 per member per month, driven by a 29 percent reduction in hospital admissions.  The study concluded that workplace wellness programs may reduce health risks and costs for employees with manifest chronic disease.

“Employees utilize free screenings and wellness programs offered at onsite health centers, thus, preventing high-dollar claims by mitigating risks associated with chronic diseases,” said Tomlinson.

In addition to medical successes, Crowne’s clients have achieved 30 to 70 percent decreases in their healthcare claims, including clients seeing a 34 percent reduction in diabetes claims costs.

May 6, 2014 (Ocoee, Fla.)Crowne Consulting Group, Inc., an employee benefits consulting firm collaborating with CareHere, LLC to operate over 25 worksite health and wellness centers throughout Florida, have announced an increasing number of employee health and wellness centers.

The latest centers will service Lake County Sheriff’s Office as well as employees of LifeStream, which is a behavioral health and social services organization servicing children and adults in Lake and Sumter Counties.  There are approximately 1600 plan members covered under the Sheriff’s Office and LifeStream’s health plans, including employees and dependents.

At no charge to plan members (including dependents), the health and wellness center will offer primary care, occupational services, pharmacy, disease management, and wellness services such as nutritional coaching.  Plan members will also benefit from zero deductibles, no copays, and free health risk assessments with lab work for evaluation of cholesterol, blood sugar, liver function, blood pressure and other bio-metric panels.

“An increasing number of private employers and governments are launching employee health centers to lower health costs by improving care, enhancing disease management, and providing easier access to care,” said Ray Tomlinson, president of Crowne Consulting Group.

In addition to corporations and governments, school districts are becoming self-insured and offering worksite care to save money for both employees and their districts.  Levy County Schools opened an employee health center in February, and Indian River County Schools’ center is slated to be opening this summer.  For information about the growing number of employee health centers opening in Florida, visit: https://crowneinc.com/news/.

Enhanced Employee Benefits and Onsite Care Bring Lower Healthcare Costs

City of Leesburg’s Employee Wellness Center, operated by Crowne Consulting Group
and CareHere, has had high utilization of medical services and has decreased
employee healthcare costs.
Crowne-Leesburg Press Release-11-14-13

Nov. 14, 2013 (Ocoee, Fla.)Crowne Consulting Group, an employee benefits consulting firm specializing in onsite health and wellness centers in Florida, reports that the City of Leesburg has saved millions of dollars by adding a worksite health center for employees, retirees, and dependents covered under its healthcare plan.

The City of Leesburg’s Employee Wellness Center saved the city $1.3 million within the first year of opening in January 2011.  The trend continued in 2012 with $459,000 in savings, and this year pushing $600,000 saved dollars back into the general fund.

Dann Herrin, Leesburg’s Assistant Director, Human Services, says these savings will increase because the city has recently added workers’ compensation, triage, and occupational health services through the employee wellness center, which is co-operated by Crowne Consulting Group and Tennessee-based CareHere, LLC.

“I think CareHere’s onsite care model has been outstanding, and the Crowne folks have been a wonderful resource – they’re always there when we need them,” said Herrin.  “At first, I was skeptical if our employees would switch doctors and use the center, but the medical service providers were outstanding at keeping employees very comfortable.”

Approximately 86 percent of the city’s 1100 eligible members eagerly visited the center in the first year for primary care, screenings, and chronic disease management.  A reputation of quality service and no out-of-pocket costs drove utilization up to 96 percent this year.

“It’s a win-win-win,” added Herrin.  “Taxpayers save money, the city can reallocate savings for more resources, and the employees see outstanding financial savings while easily accessing care.”

Pasco school district clinics
bring big health care savings

Dade City — Lose weight.

Rita Mitchell had heard the words many times before.

But it wasn’t until the Cox Elementary School prekindergarten teacher got the advice during a health risk assessment at the Pasco County school district’s wellness center that she took the message to heart. Mitchell learned she was at risk for diabetes, and heard loud and clear what ignoring the signs could mean.

“It was enough to get my attention,” she said. “This thing, if left unattended, it can kill you. She told me to lose weight. I’ve been hearing that for years. But it was like, hello.”

Flash forward a year, and Mitchell is a new woman.

“I just turned 50, and I lost 50,” she said. “I am excited.”

Her success mirrors that of many other district employees, and of the health clinic program that the school district introduced two years ago.

The School Board approved spending about $1.5 million a year to operate three school-based clinics, offering free appointments and medications, in addition to preventive wellness programs for employees. The idea was that the district would save money in the long run by reducing insurance claims and related expenses.

Last year, the district saw its claims drop by more than $2 million, with per-employee costs down by nearly 5 percent. Its rates did not increase as much as expected, allowing the board to use savings to reduce the number of furlough days imposed on employees.

Its focus on diabetes care resulted in a 34 percent decrease in related claims, and the district saw a 26 percent increase in diabetes patients actually getting the monitoring tests they need. Its efforts on weight reduction, expected to net about 1,000 pounds among participants, totaled a loss of 3,800 pounds by those employees.

Use of the centers has been so strong, in fact, that the district is considering opening two others, as well as a center focused on occupational health and physical therapy. District benefits director Mary Tillman said they had to add staff to the centers over the summer to meet the growing demand.

With medical costs rising, Tillman said, the only real way to cut expenses is to get people healthy. Making visits convenient and affordable, while focusing on managing chronic illnesses and catching problems before they get out of hand, has allowed the district to make such strides.

“I’m very proud of our wellness centers,” said School Board chairwoman Cynthia Armstrong, who sits on the district health and wellness incentives committee. “I really feel like it’s been a win-win situation for the district and the employees.”

Armstrong said she and her husband both take advantage of the services the clinics offer, and can see firsthand the benefits. Other districts have started looking at Pasco as a model, she added, as they consider establishing their own wellness programs….See Tampa Bay Times for this full story.

Central Fla. Cities Push for Health Clinics

CENTRAL FLORIDA — In an effort to save taxpayer money, mayors and council members across central Florida are asking to start their own health care clinics.

CareHere is a company that’s helped local cities, counties and school districts open their own health care centers for employees, retirees and their families.

“The average cost for a regular visit — the difference is about 50 percent less to have it done at our health center here,” said Jim Carnicella of CareHere in Ocoee. In addition to Ocoee, there are CareHere clinics in Sanford, Lake Mary, Apopka and one coming soon in Kissimmee. They are all free to employees of those cities and their families.

“Every service that we have here, all the primary care that you would receive at a regular physician’s office, we do here and it’s free to the employee and their dependents,” Carnicella said.

He said when the clinic opened in 2008, health care costs for Ocoee were projected to skyrocket from $3.5 million to nearly $6 million. Instead, health care costs for the city haven’t increased at all.

“The doctors and the staff get paid an hourly rate to see as many patients as they can,” Carnicella said.

Doctors at CareHere clinics get more time to talk to patients. They’re allotted 20 minutes with each person. Most clinics offer about five minutes with the doctor. Most clinics are paid by insurance companies, but at CareHere clinics doctors, nurses, X-ray technicians and other workers only work for their municipality.

“It’s really brought me back to why I went into medicine — to just focus on patient care and not think about insurance and getting authorizations and doing what I think is right for the patient,” said Ocoee city physician Dr. Roberta Chung.

Municipal CareHere clinics are also one-stop shopping – X-rays, blood work, rehabilitation and a pharmacy are available right in the clinic.

Shots for Tots Combines Toy Drive with Free Flu Shots

Crowne Consulting Group, CareHere, and Pasco Schools partner to collect toy donations while providing protection against the flu.

Dec. 19, 2012 (Ocoee, Fla.) – Crowne Consulting Group, Inc. and CareHere LLC announces that they teamed up with the District School Board of Pasco County last week for “Shots for Tots,” a program to offer free flu shots to all adults and children ten-years old and older who donated an unwrapped children’s toy.

As part of the program, CareHere nurses visited several school campuses offering the free vaccine to eligible individuals in an attempt to vaccinate as many people as possible during what is considered by the CDC as a more severe flu season.

In addition to inoculating community members and increasing protection against the flu, the program also collected toys for children in the Pasco County area to aid in the District’s yearly efforts to provide presents for children whose families cannot afford to purchase gifts this year. Guidance counselors from the District School Board of Pasco County joined the drive, picking up the donations and distributing them among needy families whose children attend Pasco County schools.

Toys donated at flu shot clinics outside school campuses were donated to Metropolitan Ministries to assist in boosting their annual toy drive, which had been experiencing a decrease in the number of donations this year.

Crowne Consulting Group collaborates with Tennessee-based CareHere, LLC to operate more than 25 on-site health centers throughout Florida.  Since 2011, Pasco Schools have had three onsite health and wellness centers for their employees.  A news segment highlighting how Pasco Schools saved $2 million in the first year of opening its CareHere health and wellness centers is available at https://crowneinc.com/news/.

Win-Win in Workers’
Compensation for Employees and Employers

Onsite health centers enhance care while lowering

workers compensation costs

December 5, 2012 (Ocoee, Fla.) – Beyond improving employee healthcare through onsite health centers, Crowne Consulting Group, Inc. is drastically lowering health costs and decreasing workers’ compensation costs for employers.

Crowne collaborates with Tennessee-based CareHere, LLC to operate more than 25 health and wellness centers throughout Florida, with the City of Lake Mary opening last month and the City of Kissimmee slated for 2013.  CareHere specializes in primary care, occupational services, pharmacy, and disease management.  Its cost-saving model helps self-funded employers extend employee benefits to include zero copays, no deductibles, and free screenings.

Crowne and CareHere’s worksite centers are the first stop for triage and treatment of workers’ compensation and other occupational services.  Services are fully compliant as there is no co-mingling of health information with work-related services.  The occupational health providers also follow required regulations related to medical surveillance programs, drug testing, reporting, and return to duty.

“An on-the-job injury can set back an organization’s productivity, but health centers offer prompt care to mitigate risks and expedite return-to-work programs,” said Ray Tomlinson, president of Crowne Consulting Group.  “Instead of days or weeks, many workers are back to work within hours.”

Since opening three onsite health centers in 2011 and implementing numerous wellness and benefits education programs, Pasco Schools realized a more than 50 percent decrease in workers’ compensation costs, totaling over $1.5 million in savings.

Th City of Ocoee’s medical costs of its workers’ compensation program averaged a 70 percent annual reduction during a four-year span.  Last year, 92 percent of eligible employees visited the center at least once, with 35 percent of the visits for acute care.
